Moving Motivators technique (2 minutes, EN)

Moving Motivators is a technique from the book Management 3.0 by Jurgen Appelo. It is meant to help us reflect on motivation and how it affects organizational change.

To Work

The Moving Motivators technique is a simple instrument that consists of seven cards with motivators on them. Each motivator card looks at a specific energy sources, as identified by scientific research based on the Job Demands-Resource Model. An energy sources helps you cope with job demands and therefore contributes to the engagement and job satisfaction of team members.

  1. Select a context to investigate. Write it down, for every participant to see. Provide each participant with a full deck of motivator cards.
  2. Each participant sorts their cards in order of importance to them in the given context. This is done in silence.
  3. Let all (or some) participants elaborate on their ordering of the motivators. Ask questions like: “Why is that important to you? What happens if this motivator is well fulfilled? What happens if this motivator is poorly met?”
  4. Each participant moves up the motivators that are well fulfilled in this context, and moves down the motivators that are poorly met.
  5. Discuss the result and determine one or more points for improvement based on the insights.
